How They Came Up With The Idea
As my wife was selling on Amazon and I was helping out with the operations, the business started to grow and I found myself spending so much time in front of the monitor and multiple spreadsheets. Rather than growing the business I was stuck in the weeds of trying to decipher data and insights from spreadsheets. And as they say, there had to be a better way. That’s when I realized I needed to automate the entire process of data importing and analytics.
The inception of Gorilla ROI occurred as Jae and his wife were engaged in selling products on Amazon, with him assisting in the operations.
As their business began to expand, he found himself dedicating an increasing amount of time to managing data across multiple spreadsheets, which hindered the growth of the business.
He felt overwhelmed by the need to extract meaningful insights from the data manually, a challenge that led him to the realization that there must be a more efficient method to handle this aspect of the business.
Consequently, he decided that automating the process of data importing and analytics was the optimal solution to streamline operations and focus more effectively on business growth.
How They Built The First Version
The founder began by conducting keyword research and scouring through forums where his ideal customers were known to hang out. This was to determine whether the problem he was trying to solve was valid. By doing so, he allowed the user base to determine the direction and development of the product via feedback and requests.
Moreover, he posted his idea on Amazon forums and Reddit and received immediate feedback, which was enough to give them confidence. Google Sheets was the perfect platform for this project since no UI was required. This meant that he did not have to hire a designer, and it also sped up the development time by 4x. In that regard, what would have taken 1 year with a designer and developer took only 2 to 3 months to launch.
Growth Channels
Their initial customers were acquired during the market analysis phase where he asked people for their opinions on his spreadsheet models and his basic MVP (Minimum Viable Product).
It was these individuals who expressed interest in purchasing his product, despite it not being fully developed at the time.
In addition, word of mouth and SEO have continued to be a significant source of new customers. On SEO, his focus is on crafting articles to address as many Amazon seller-related questions as possible.
Targeting highly specific keywords with lower traffic but high purchase intent has also resulted in very effective conversion rates.
